Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
