Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
